two-and-a-half-hour sail from Athens, Spetses offers elegant

Chugging into the historic port aboard your luxury yacht, you’ll be
greeted by the century-old Poseidonion Grand Hotel, a popular haunt
of movie icons such as Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe. In the
marina, you’ll rub shoulders with the global super-yacht group –
and might even spot a living legend yourself. The town offers winding
cobblestone streets, numerous historic statues, traditional tavernas
and stylish cafes. Drop anchor off the coast and dive into the
electric-blue sea for some snorkelling and swimming.

Scented
with pine forests, aromatic herbs and oleander, Spetses transports
you back to a gentle time when taking an evening stroll was the order
of the day. The town’s promenade is perfect for leisurely walks,
and because motorised transport is restricted, a horse-drawn carriage
could be your transport for the day. Take a torch and head to Agios
Anargyri beach in the west and swim in the famous Bekiri cave, where
stalactites and stalagmites hang like candelabra wax. Ayia Paraskevi
Beach, with its crystalline waters and hilly backdrop, is a beautiful
place to drop anchor. Fancy something different? Book a horseback
ride to Panagia Elonas with Greg’s Spetses Horses and admire the
views from the beautiful church on top of the mountain.

With
stunning sea views and elegant décor, On the Verandah, in the
Poseidonion Hotel, is arguably one of the classiest dining
experiences on the island. Try the smoked swordfish with orange and
tuna ravioli. For more relaxed dining, try Clock, which specialises
in pizzas, pasta and burgers, while Mourayo, on the water in the old
harbour, serves excellent fresh fish and seafood. Akrogialia is
perfect for a romantic dinner, with tables set on the beach at
Kounoupitsa and a menu of top-notch seafood, such as grilled squid
and shrimp pasta.

Spetses
has a vibrant nightlife scene, with many bars playing Greek music for
their upmarket local clientele. Mayo Bar has a fabulous veranda
overlooking the sea and serves excellent cocktails. Palms on the
Verandah, at the famous Poseidonion Grand Hotel, has exquisite sea
views and serves unique cocktails made from the finest ingredients.
La Luz, on the top floor of an old stone building overlooking the old
harbour, is a lively spot for a cocktail sundowner.
